Wagamama "From Bowl To Soul" by Jan Vrhovnik

The first in my inspiration series is from a good friend of mine, Jan Vrhovnik. Jan is a London-based multi award-winning cinematographer and filmmaker. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jan the last few years in London and remotely in Paris. Not only is Jan an extreme talent behind the lens but he is one of the most genuine and kind people I have ever met.

I reference “From Bowl To Soul” a lot. It’s a new take on your traditional restaurant spot. It perfectly balances the chaos from the kitchen to the soulful happiness of a dinner table surrounded by friends. When I was last in London, I met Jan for lunch and pressed him on every video question I could muster in my brain. Jan loves sharing the nitty-gritty details behind his shoots. The most fascinating aspect of this commercial was the lighting. I asked how he balanced lighting a large dining room space and then a small, cramped kitchen. His secret was hiring a chief lighting technician to replace all of the lights in both spaces with Quasar tubes. For those of you thinking, “Okay, so?” Well, let me assure you that is no easy feat. To get that level of access and trust from a client is very difficult. So, while you watch keep an eye out for the lights and see how Jan’s team was able to harmonize the colors of chaos and soulful warmth.

Enjoy!
